I wrote an article on Orkney Pioneers at Fort Victoria for the Orkney Family History Society and have posted additional information on my blog which may be of interest to researchers. I’ve also included a brief sidebar on Victoria’s Early Cemeteries.
My Table of Orkney Pioneers at Fort Victoria lists all 66 Orkney pioneers I identified during my research. The table includes links to headstone photos and obituaries.
I’ve also added a series of image galleries that include photos I’ve taken as well as those from the archives:
- Fort Victoria Brick Project
- Ross Bay Cemetery
- Old Burying Ground
- Fort Victoria
- Victoria in the 1860′s
- Victoria in the 1870′s
- Victoria today

Imagine my surprise and delight to find your blog. I was even more delighted to find a link to my gg-grandfather: James Goudie [Stromness, Orkney - Victoria], his first wife, Catherine [Kalapoya / Nez Perce -- depending on the source] who gave birth seven children — five of whom reached adulthood – the ones with links had unions which increased the descendants. Our numbers are now in the hundreds and we live from Southern California to Vancouver Island and the Interior of BC.
Hi Dennice,
Thanks for commenting on my blog … I’m glad you were pleased to find it. When I researched the article I was hoping descendants would eventually stumble upon it. I’ve received a couple of emails from others who have also descended from the Orkney pioneers. By the way, I did include a paragraph on your gg-grandparents in the article too (first link on this page, just in case you only saw the link in the table of pioneers). Thanks again!
Steve
