Table of Orkney Pioneers at Fort Victoria

This is an online version of the table published in my article for the Orkney Family History Society. I’ve omitted some fields but have added links to photographs of headstones and obituaries.

Name:	individuals are listed alphabetically by surname and grouped by grave reference.
Died:	I’ve done my best to provide the date of death rather than burial but in some cases it may be the latter.
Buried:	a grave reference indicates they are buried in Victoria’s Ross Bay Cemetery. The “Old Burying Ground” indicates they are buried in Victoria at what is now known as Pioneer Square. A reference to any other location indicates they were buried there and not in Victoria. The Old Cemeteries Society of Victoria provides information on How to Find a Grave (pdf) in Ross Bay Cemetery.
Photo:	I took all the headstone photos between March and May 2011. An entry without a photo indicates there was no marker on the grave.
Obit:	If I found an obituary in the Daily Colonist I listed the date of publication and a link to the image (courtesy of The Daily Colonist: Online Edition 1858-1910 and the Times-Colonist). Links labelled “Transcription” show a summary of an obituary obtained through the University of Victoria’s excellent Victoria’s Victoria website. I provided an example but encourage you to visit their Newspaper Index yourself.
